Top Windsurfing Locations - Wellington, New Zealand

Time for another Top Windsurfing Location from around the globe and today's entry is Wellington, New Zealand. This little slice of windsurf paradise is a gorgeous alcove of blue water surrounded by lush grassy hills.  Wellington is also known to be one of the windiest cities in the world which is an almost perfect spot for windsurfing as it's winds are sure to carrying you over the waves with great ease. While it's not suggested for beginner windsurfers, any veteran water man would find themselves navigating this harbor with ease in no time.

The climate in Wellington, New Zealand is a temperate marine one, is generally moderate all year round, and rarely sees temperatures rise above 25 °C (77 °F), or fall below 4 °C (39 °F). The hottest recorded temperature in the city is 31.1 °C (88 °F), while -1.9 °C (28 °F) is the coldest. The city is notorious however for its southerly blasts in winter, which may make the temperature feel much colder. Blind Windsurfer Will Attempt To Cross Strait of Gibraltar

Xavier Mandico, Blind SurferI find myself drawn to those that overcome adversity, which is why this story from International Windsurfing caught my eye.  The article is focused on Xavier Mandico who is a blind windsurfer from Spain that has plans to windsurf across the Strait of Gibraltar. Xavier has created a windsurfing program that focuses on teaching his fellow impaired beginner windsurfers how to get out on the waves around Spain with confidence.  Stories like Xavier's shows how important being out on the water is to any true windsurfer. For more details about Xavier's great windsurfing attempt or to just support his effort please check out this link to Water Hound's website.

Veteran and Beginner Windsurfing Classes Held in Montauk, NY

The leaves changing on the trees is no excuse to not learn windsurfing. Even in chilly Montauk, New York there's a windsurfing camp that is holding an event on Sept 24-26.  The Montauk ABK Board Sports Windsurfing Camp is holding classes this month that are split up by skill level and geared towards starting or furthering your knowledge rather than have you in a cookie cutter windsurf class. Their focus on teaching makes for classes that will be satisfying to the veteran windsurfer and novice ones alike. For more details on the event and windsurfing classes by ABK Board Sports please check out this link.

2010 Windsurf Event Held At Hatteras, North Carolina

Wavejam HatterasThis year's Hatteras Wave Jam 2010 was held this weekend in the outer banks of North Carolina.  The event featured plenty of great windsurfing action and the event coordinators had the presence of mind to broadcast live on the web through Sept. 15-19th.  The livestream had hundreds of eager windsurfing enthusiasts from around the world all tuning into the event's official website.

As for the event itself, hundreds of windsurfers competed in almost perfect weather and swells that were influenced by Hurricane Igor's short-lived fury.  The results of the various windsailing events that were held over the last few days can be found on the Hatteras Windsurf Google Group page. Unfortunately the high amount of visitors that have sailed across the event's official website have caused it to hiccup over the last few days so please continue to try this link for official information.

Extreme Weather Windsurfing and Water Sports

Most people's fight or flight instincts kick in when faced with  severe weather then there's those windsurfers, surfers, and paddleboarders that live for those moments.  It takes a special kind of water man to immediately figure out how to safely harness these often dangerous gusts of mother nature's fury by grabbing their windsurf rig and heading out. For the rest of us it's a lot easier to view pictures of hurricane windsurfing like the ones we just uploaded to our flickr account today.  You can also check out a video of some great hurricane windsurfing action below from the Red Bull Storm Chase - Extreme Windsurfers video clip.

Top Windsurfing Locations - Scotland

On this week's Top Windsurfing Locations article we highlight the great land of Scotland.  Scotland has may not be the first place you think of for great windsurfing action but thankfully we're here to show you otherwise.  Scotland offers plenty of inland and coastal locations for you to test your rig out on and a bevy of interesting historical castles and sights to feast your eyes on while up on your board.

The climate of Scotland is temperate and oceanic, and tends to be very changeable. It is warmed by the Gulf Stream from the Atlantic, and as such has much milder winters (but cooler, wetter summers) than areas on similar latitudes. However, temperatures are generally lower than in the rest of the UK. Winter maximums average 6 °C (42.8 °F) in the lowlands, with summer maximums averaging 18 °C (64.4 °F).  While it may seem a bit cold to be out windsurfing out on the breezy waters in Scotland that shouldn't discourage you from hopping on a plane to this Top Windsurfing Location.

2010 PWA Women's Slalom Finals Held in Almanarre, France

The final women's PWA Slalom event of the 2010 PWA windsurfing season was set to happen over the last few days in Almanarre, France.  Unfortunately pour wind conditions had the female athletes spending more time on the beach poised for the go ahead than out on the waves enjoying some slalom windsurfing action.  Thankfully the competitors still have that fighting spirit in them and will be racing as soon as mother nature smiles down on them and gives them a steady bit of wind to pick up their sails.  For more information please check out the PWA World Tour homepage for up to the minute coverage of the Women's Slalom PWA Finals.

Top Windsurfing Locations - Midwest United States

Pictures from the MidwestSometimes the best windsurfing locations can be those that are right outside your back door.  The Discover Windsurfing blog initially set out to make a list of the Top Locations for Windsurfing from across the globe but we now set our sights on more local wind surfing locations.  Next up on our list of the best windsurf is the Midwest United States.  Sure you can find amazing windsurfing spots on the East and West coast of the US but how about overlooked center of the country.  Whether it's Michigan, Ohio, or  Minnesota there are plenty of windsurfing locations scattered throughout the Mid West.

Usually in our blog posts about the top windsurfing locations we use this section to tell a little bit about the climate of the location we're highlighting but this time we're doing things a little different.  The Mid West is unlike many of the other hot spots we've spoken about due to the fact that it has very distinct seasons and prime windsurfing weather is mixed between Spring and Summer.  But the large number of lakes scattered through out the region make finding a great spot quite easy to do and websites like  MoWind.com serve to highlight specific lakes that stand out from the rest for windsurfing.  A few of the top locations for windsurfing from around the Midwest are Traverse City, MI, near Cleveland, OH,  Chicago, IL, and St. Paul, Minnesota.  Next time you're looking for a great windsurfing vacation spot why not check out someplace lesser known and closer to home, you just might find your own little peace of windsurf heaven.
