This little slice of windsurf paradise is a gorgeous alcove of blue water surrounded by lush grassy hills.  Wellington is also known to be one of the windiest cities in the world which is an almost perfect spot for windsurfing as it's winds are sure to carrying you over the waves with great ease. While it's not suggested for beginner windsurfers, any veteran water man would find themselves navigating this harbor with ease in no time.

The climate in Wellington, New Zealand is a temperate marine one, is generally moderate all year round, and rarely sees temperatures rise above 25 °C (77 °F), or fall below 4 °C (39 °F). The hottest recorded temperature in the city is 31.1 °C (88 °F), while -1.9 °C (28 °F) is the coldest. The city is notorious however for its southerly blasts in winter, which may make the temperature feel much colder. 2010 Windsurf Event Held At Hatteras, North Carolina

This year's Hatteras Wave Jam 2010 was held this weekend in the outer banks of North Carolina.  The event featured plenty of great windsurfing action and the event coordinators had the presence of mind to broadcast live on the web through Sept. 15-19th.  The livestream had hundreds of eager windsurfing enthusiasts from around the world all tuning into the event's official website.

As for the event itself, hundreds of windsurfers competed in almost perfect weather and swells that were influenced by Hurricane Igor's short-lived fury.  The results of the various windsailing events that were held over the last few days can be found on the Hatteras Windsurf Google Group page. On this week's Top Windsurfing Locations article we highlight the great land of Scotland.  Scotland has may not be the first place you think of for great windsurfing action but thankfully we're here to show you otherwise.  Scotland offers plenty of inland and coastal locations for you to test your rig out on and a bevy of interesting historical castles and sights to feast your eyes on while up on your board.

The climate of Scotland is temperate and oceanic, and tends to be very changeable. It is warmed by the Gulf Stream from the Atlantic, and as such has much milder winters (but cooler, wetter summers) than areas on similar latitudes. However, temperatures are generally lower than in the rest of the UK. Winter maximums average 6 °C (42.8 °F) in the lowlands, with summer maximums averaging 18 °C (64.4 °F).  While it may seem a bit cold to be out windsurfing out on the breezy waters in Scotland that shouldn't discourage you from hopping on a plane to this Top Windsurfing Location.

2010 PWA Women's Slalom Finals Held in Almanarre, France

Sometimes the best windsurfing locations can be those that are right outside your back door.  The Discover Windsurfing blog initially set out to make a list of the Top Locations for Windsurfing from across the globe but we now set our sights on more local wind surfing locations.  Next up on our list of the best windsurf is the Midwest United States.  Sure you can find amazing windsurfing spots on the East and West coast of the US but how about overlooked center of the country.  Whether it's Michigan, Ohio, or  Minnesota there are plenty of windsurfing locations scattered throughout the Mid West.

Midwest Windsurfing Event Held in Michigan This September

Sarah-Quinta Offringa and Gollito Estredo Take Top Freestyle

The 2010 PWA Freestyle World Cup Lanzarote windsurfing racing event was held at Coasta Teguise just last week and the event was rough at points but was full great windsurfing action.  The World Cup Lanzarote event was the 2nd major windsurf event within the PWA World Cup and had the best of the best windsurfers from around the world competing for top honors at this windsurf event.  None other than Sarah-Quinta Ofringa and Gollito Estredo took 1st place in their respective races and did a great job of showing off their windsurfing skills.  For more details about the windsurfing racing event please check out this link.

Online Gaming With Windsurfing MMX PC Game

With the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) going on throughout this week in Los Angeles at the LA Convention Center we thought it'd be prime time to report on a windsurfing video game.  While not from Nintendo, Microsoft, or Sony Windsurfing MMX is a down loadable PC game that features dozens of freestyle windsurfing moves and plenty of styles of races to compete in.  The game not only allows for you to compete for high scores and against the computer but lets you fight it out with online gaming against other virtual windsurfers for top billing across all the featured event types.

2010 US Windsurfing Championship To Be Held in San Francisco

The 2010 professional windsurfing season continue to move forward and we are fast approaching some of the biggest events.  One particular set of events we have our eyes on is the 2010 US Windsurfing Championship (also know as the North American Formula Racing Championship) which is being held July 20th-24th.  This event will be held at the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, California and is officially sanctioned by the International Windsurfing Association.

Top Windsurfing Locations - Perth, Australia

Australia is one of the most popular tourist destinations and has collection of calm waters for stand-up paddle boarding and big waves and great wind for windsurfing. Australia's low amount of rainfall allows for more opportunity for getting out on the waves than almost any other vacation location on the planet. There is also a beauty within the large expanse of the diverse scenery of the outback and thousands of people flock to it for camping and walk-abouts.

Perth receives moderate though highly seasonal rainfall. Summers are generally hot and dry, lasting from December to late March, with February generally being the hottest month of the year, making Perth a classic example of a Mediterranean climate. Summer is not completely devoid of rain with sporadic rainfall in the form of short-lived thunderstorms, weak cold fronts and on very rare occasions decaying tropical cyclones from Western Australia's north-west which can bring significant falls. On most summer afternoons a sea breeze blows from the south-west, providing relief from the hot north-easterly winds. Temperatures often fall below 30 degrees a few hours after the arrival of the wind change. Winters are relatively cool and wet, with most of Perth's annual rainfall falling between May and September.

3rd Annual Orange Freestyle Windsurf and Extreme Sports Event

It is great to see a non commercialized event that covers multiple water sports and "extreme sports" liking windsurfing, stand-up paddlesurfing, and skateboarding without getting lost only making it mainstream.  The folks organizing the 3rd Annual Orange Freestyle Cup started the event to celebrate their respective sports and the culture surrounding them and have kept true to the ideal with the 2010 event.  The event will be held Marsielle which is located just south of France on June 16th-20th.  Unfortunately their homepage is only in french but if you're interested in viewing it please check out this link but for a great write-up about the Orange Freestyle Cup, please look at this page from Continent Seven or check out the video below.

BUCS Windsurfing Nationals Held in Southhamphton, UK

It's always great to see a gathering of windsurfers coming together to enjoy our great sport and it's a bigger to see them all take sail as one community of like minded individuals.  Seeing hundreds of students take to the waves together during the BUCS Windsurf Nationals is quite the sight to see.  The annual event is held Calshot Activities Centre in Southamphton, UK and is the culmination of a years worth of windsurfing events that have close to 300 universities competing from around the United Kingdom.

The collegiate sports event was held April 30th-May 2nd and consisted of conetestants that ranged from amateurs to experts and was focused mainly on freestyle discipline of windsurfing.  Thankfully the weather throughout the windsurf event was almost perfect and made for some great actions throughout the weekend.  For more details on the event and the results of the races check out this link or check out the video below.

2010 PWA Slalom South Korea Windsurfing Event Going Strong

The 2010 PWA Slalom South Korea windsurfing event is currently being held off of Jinha Beach in the heart of South Korea and so far it has been a great success.  The week long event has pulled in professional windsurfers from around the globe all  fighting for top honors at the event.

BWA Brandon Bay Event Brings In Windsurfers From Across UK

Hawaii is one of the most picturesque places in all the world and the United States is lucky to call this almost perfect windsurfing paradise part of our 50 states. The string of volcanic islands that make up the state of Hawaii is the home of dozens of great windsurf locations like Kailua Beach, Oahu and Kannapali Beach,Maui. Below you will have the average climate of Hawaii throughout the year as well as other information about this fantastic windsurfing destination.

Hawaii's climate is typical for the tropics, although temperatures and humidity tend to be a bit less extreme due to near-constant trade winds from the east. Summer highs are usually in the upper 80s °F, (around 31°C) during the day and mid 70s, (around 24 °C) at night. Winter day temperatures are usually in the low to mid 80s, (around 28 °C) and (at low elevation) seldom dipping below the mid 60s (18 °C) at night. Snow, not usually associated with tropics, falls at 4,205 metres (13,796 ft) on Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island in some winter months. Snow rarely falls on Haleakala. Mount Waiʻaleʻale, on Kauaʻi, has the second highest average annual rainfall on Earth, about 460 inches (11.7 m). Photos From First Event Of the 2010 PWA World Tour

As our prior windsurfing blog post spoke about, the 2010 PWA World Tour was kicked off officially with the Podersdorf Event which was held in Australia last week.  The lack of sufficient winds beached windsurfers for almost 5 days straight and they were forced to participate in beach games to pass the time.  Thankfully by day 5 the winds finally picked up and the sailors got up on their windsurf boards and headed out onto the waves to compete for top honors at the event.  Thankfully the folks at the PWA homesite were kind enough to take plenty of action photos from the week long event and they're all posted here, so please check them out.

The 2010 UKWA (United Kingdom Windsurfing Association) Freestyle Tour kicked off with a small but great event early last week.  The event was held at Branksome Dene, Poole and pulled in dozens of the UK's hottest professional, amateur, and youth windsurfers.  Events ranged from slalom to freestyle and unfortunately mother nature chose to put a damper during the start of the races but eventually allowed all the windsurfers to finally get out on the waves and compete for top honors and the huge variety of prizes that were provided by the event's sponsors.  For more details about the results of the windsurf event please check out this link from the UK Windsurfing Association's homepage.
